Detox diets are focused on eliminating toxins from the body, not weight loss as in other diets. Losing weight may be an added benefit of a detox diet, but the primary goal is to balance digestion. A balanced digestive system will naturally eliminate toxins.
Most digestive problems occur when there is a lack or excess of water. The method to achieve balance is to increase consumption of water. The body will naturally eliminate excess water.
Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine that supports detoxification through food. Some Ayurvedic herbs are ashwagandha, triphala, and garam masala.
Consuming a largely raw food diet will assist with cleansing toxins through regular elimination. The foods in this diet create an alkaline environment in which diseases cannot proliferate.
Fresh-made juices from high antioxidant foods like kale, acai berries, and cranberries support immune function. The best juices are made fresh, not bottled or stored. A detox fast can be approached gradually by daily juicing.
Most detox diets involve fasting. Teas can be diuretic, so know the properties of the tea you chose for your fast. Using a diuretic tea can dehydrate you, making the detox more difficult to sustain.
