How to Make House Plants Grow Fast

Houseplants create a lush, inviting atmosphere with their fresh green leaves and health-promoting properties. Not only are they beautiful, they also filter toxins from the air and increase oxygen. Understanding their natural growing process allows you to keep them in top shape throughout the year. Even though you may wish you could suddenly make them grow faster, keep in mind that most plants experience periods of active growth from March to September and rest for the remainder of the year.

Step 1

Increase growth in early spring by beginning a regular schedule of water-soluble fertilizing. You can purchase this fertilizer for houseplants, but those designed for outdoor growing work just as well.

Step 2

Mix the solution according to the directions on the box. Water houseplants thoroughly before applying fertilizer. Young roots are easily damaged if fertilizer is applied when the soil is dry. Pour about 1/2 to 1 cup (depending on the size of the plant) of the solution into the soil of each houseplant and allow to drain naturally. This will give your plants a boost of nutrition. You should see new growth within a week or two.

Step 3

Mix a solution of 1/4 strength fertilizer and use it to water your houseplants every seven to 10 days throughout spring and summer. A weaker solution can be mixed and used for more frequent watering. Do not exceed the recommended amount. This may damage your plant and will not make it grow faster.

Step 4

Stop applying fertilizer in September when you notice that growth begins to slow. Allow the plant to rest through the winter months. Resume application in March when new growth begins.

Step 5

Provide proper lighting for your houseplant. Plants that grow tall and leggy are not receiving enough light. Move them to an area that receives more light. Leaves that turn pale may indicate too much light. Wilting quickly also indicates exposure to more light than your plant needs.
