Advanced Nutrients and General Hydroponics are arguably the two largest wholesale and retail suppliers of hydroponics nutrients, supplies and equipment in the world. Each company maintains a comprehensive Web presence and legions of devoted customers.
Advanced Nutrients began when three partners---Michael Straumietis, Robert Higgins, and Eugene Yordanov---decided to meld their various talents in business, marketing, horticulture, and engineering to start Canadian Soiless Ltd. in 1996. By 2001, they were ready to start up a new line of hydroponics products under the Advanced Nutrients logo.
General Hydroponics, founded by Lawrence Brooke, began operations in the mid-1970s. As of 2010, it operates factories in North America and Europe, according to its website.
Advanced Nutrients had the distinction of acting as technical advisers on hydroponics set design for the Showtime TV program "Weeds."
General Hydroponics has offices in Canada, Australia and Europe, where GH Europe was established in 1995 in southwest France.
According to General Hydroponics' website, it maintains a 10-acre research facility in Sebastopol, California, where it tests new equipment designs, nutrient formulations and crops. A 45,000-square-foot factory complex also occupies the site.
Advanced Nutrients also publishes a magazine, "Rosebud," featuring a unique blend of content about hydroponics, entertainment, sports and lifestyles.
