Grow your own seedlings in a greenhouse that requires very little space and can be constructed from 2-liter plastic drink bottles. Line your window sill with mini greenhouses and grow your own herbs or flowering plants indoors. Turn your plastic bottle greenhouse into a lesson for children on how to plant a seed or cutting and grow it into a plant. Kids will be able to see each step of the growing cycle from the first sprout to the mature plant. Once the plants are large enough they can be transferred to larger pots or into your outdoor garden.
Build a Greenhouse
Soak both of the 2-liter plastic drink bottles, with the caps removed, in hot soapy water. Remove the label from the bottles. Wash, rinse and thoroughly dry the plastic bottles.
Measure 8 inches from the bottom of both bottles and make a mark all the way around the bottles with a marker. Cut both bottles on the line with a razor knife. Discard the bottle tops.
Mix 4 cups of potting soil with 1/2 cup of water to moisten it. Cover the bottom of a plastic bottle with a few pieces of gravel or small rock for drainage. Cover the rocks with 4 inches of moist potting soil.
Make several holes, 2 inches deep, in the potting soil with your finger. Drop your seeds in the holes and cover with potting soil. To grow plants from cuttings, make 2 inch deep holes with your finger and place the cutting in the hole. Gently pack potting soil around the cutting to secure it. You can plant 6 to 10 cuttings depending on how large they are.
Slide the second plastic bottle bottom over the newly planted plastic bottle to close the greenhouse. Place the plastic bottle greenhouse where it will receive maximum sunlight.
