Clay tiles make a beautiful addition to any home or project. From putting down a floor to covering a wall, clay tiles come in a rainbow of colors and decorations. If you want to get more involved in the decoration of your tile, you can make your own clay tiles. Here's what you'll need to create your own tiles to hang in your home or give as a gift.

Step 1

Draw the pattern for the tiles on a piece of paper before you start. This is especially useful if you plan on putting a different design on each tile so they form a picture when they're put together.

Step 2

Take white clay and repeatedly throw it against a porous surface to remove any air trapped inside the clay.

Step 3

Roll the clay out with a rolling pin until it is flat and 1/4-inch thick. When measuring your tiles, you'll want to add 1/4 inch to the length and width you need because they will shrink slightly.

Step 4

Use a square ruler to measure your tiles. Cut them out of the white clay. Make several extra tiles in case some break later on.

Step 5

Press a textured material into the top of the tile to add decoration. Remove the material after you've firmly pressed the texture into the clay.

Step 6

Bake the tiles in a kiln until they are completely dry and hard.

Step 7

Cover the bottom of each tile with wax to keep it free of paint or glaze. The wax will melt away when you bake the tiles and the clean surface will help you stick the tile onto a surface such as a floor.

Step 8

Paint or glaze the tiles after you have covered the bottom with the protective wax. You can add decorations and paint designs from stencils.

Step 9

Dip the tiles into a clear glaze and put them back into the kiln. After they have dried, let them cool down and they're ready to use.
