Overview

A wishing well you can make from natural stones will add a charming touch to your garden landscape. Look around your property for medium sized rocks to make the structure, or purchase stones from your local garden supply store. This simple wishing well design is reminiscent of an old country well and is a beautiful addition to any garden.

Step 1

Excavate the desired area for your wishing well 2 to 3 inches below the soil level. Remove any grass, roots, stones and other debris from the area. A circular design is common for wishing wells, but you can make yours any shape that you like. If you are purchasing the stones, a landscape supply professional can advise you on the amount of stone you will need for your project if you provide them with the desired dimensions of your wishing well.

Step 2

Mix the mortar according to the package directions. Cover the excavated ground with a thin layer of mortar.

Step 3

Press the largest stones into the mortar around the perimeter of the excavated area. Add another layer of mortar on top of the stones. Press another row of the largest remaining rocks into the mortar. Continue to build a stone wall upwards to 3 or 4 feet tall, using the largest remaining stones for each successive layer. Reserve enough stones to add a top layer. Allow the mortar mix to dry.

Step 4

Fit a section of thick plastic pond liner inside the wishing well. The liner should fit from the ground to the top of the stone wall. Hold the liner in place with rocks arranged around the inside of the well. Mold the liner up and over the top of the stone wall, fitting the liner to the inside of the wall. Cut the liner so that the top edge covers the top row of stones.

Step 5

Lift the liner and add a layer of mortar to the top layer of stone. Press the plastic liner into the mortar. Add more mortar on top of the plastic and press stones to create the top rim of your wishing well.

Step 6

Fill the wishing well with water.
