How to Repair the Top Ring of an Above-Ground Inflatable Pool

Overview

Instant pools are one of the easiest ways to quickly and easily set up a pool for your family. The only preparation necessary is to level the ground, spread out the pool and inflate the ring. Once complete, fill the pool with water. As the water level rises, the ring floats, thereby erecting the pool's walls. The only drawback to this type of above-ground inflatable pool is that the top ring can get holes in it, causing it to deflate, and the pool to empty. Repairing holes in the ring is an easy task, requiring nothing more than a vinyl repair kit.

Step 1

Using an air compressor, overfill the top ring of your pool, until the ring feels hard to the touch.

Step 2

Walk around the pool while spraying the ring with a soapy water mixture.

Step 3

Rub your hand over the ring, through the soapy water, being sure to spread it to the inside of the ring as well as the underside.

Step 4

Look for soapy bubbles on the ring, which indicate an air leak.

Step 5

Wipe the bubbles off with a paper towel, and circle the hole using a permanent marker.

Step 6

Continue walking around the ring looking for bubbles, and repeat this process until you've walked around the entire pool.

Step 7

Open the air valve of the ring, and release excess air, so that the pool ring's still firm, but not excessively hard.

Step 8

Abrade each of the areas where you've located a hole, using fine grit sandpaper. Use gentle pressure.

Step 9

Clean the same areas with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth.

Step 10

Use the patch material in your vinyl repair kit. Cut out a circular patch that's approximately 50 percent larger than the hole. Circular patches work best, because they don't have corners that are prone to peeling.

Step 11

Apply the glue from your kit to the patch, being sure to cover the entire surface area.

Step 12

Press the patch to the hole, using firm pressure, and hold it in place for one minute, or the amount of time suggested by the instructions in the vinyl repair kit.

Step 13

Inflate the pool ring to the desired firmness.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep sharp objects, such as scissors, away from the pool ring to avoid possible puncture.
