The spiral staircase stitch, also called the Chinese staircase stitch, looks much more complicated than some of the other basic lanyard stitches. However, it is also one of the easiest lanyard stitches to make. It comes out looking like a spiral staircase winding around a center rope.
Cut three of the four strands so that they are 1 to 2 feet long. Cut the fourth strand so that it is about four times as long as the others.
Gather the four strands into a bunch and tie a knot at one end to connect them together. The long strand should be on the right side.
Take the long strand and loop it to the left over the other three strands and around the back.
Pull the long strand through the right side of the loop, essentially tying a knot around the other three strands.
Pull the long strand tightly to complete the stitch.
Repeat Steps 3-5 to make additional stitches. Tie a knot at the other end of the lanyard when it reaches the desired length.
