1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup water 2 medium Golden Delicious apples 3/4 cup flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup shortening 6 tablespoons milk 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon sugar 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Combine 1/2 cup sugar and water; bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Peel, core and halve apples; place in shallow baking dish. Pour sugar mixture over apples. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening. Add milk to make stiff dough. Top each apple half with a mound of dough, covering apple well. Make hollow hole in center of dough. Mix butter, sugar and cinnamon. Spoon into hollows of dough. Bake at 450 degrees F for 25-30 minutes, or until apples are tender. Serve warm, with cream if desired.
