Society is making a push toward healthier living, including a change in diet. Having healthier eating habits results in money saved from both doctor's visits and the grocery store. In many cases, making your own lunch costs less than purchasing a meal. A salad and sandwich combination can be both healthy and filling.
If you have leftover steak from dinner, turn it into a sandwich the next day. Slice the steak into thin strips and heat them in a pan with some olive oil and garlic cloves. Salt and pepper the steak to taste, then add butter, simmer, and let the steak rest for five minutes. Ciabatta bread works well with steak sandwiches, as it can soak up any juices from the steak for added flavor. Top the sandwich with mayonnaise, mustard and watercress. A simple green salad complements this sandwich well. You may want to use leftover watercress as your salad.
Avocado ham sandwiches consist of sliced deli ham and avocado slices on ficelle bread, which is a thinner baguette. Mix some butter, mustard, and pepper together to create a spread, then spread this on the bread after cutting it open. Then, add the ham and avocado slices in layers and sprinkle with sea salt. The salad combines lentils, cherry tomatoes, and a cheese called haloumi. The ingredients are held together by olive oil. The cheese should be cubed and fried lightly as the lentils are cooked and seasoned. Combine the lentils, tomatoes, and haloumi with garlic, onions, lemon juice, and olive oil.
Teriyaki turkey burgers take a classic turkey burger recipe and given it an Asian flare. Combine ground turkey with ginger, egg, panko bread crumbs, and salt, then form patties and grill alongside fresh pineapple slices. Baste the burgers with teriyaki sauce. Once they're done, top the burgers with the grilled pineapple and any other preferred ingredients. Panzanella salad lets you use any leftover stale bread. This salad is made by combining lightly toasted bread, sliced cucumber, red and yellow bell pepper cubes, tomato cubes, capers, and onion slices. Top the salad with a vinaigrette.
Muffuletta sandwiches are a classic New Orleans dish. These sandwiches consist of Italian salami, ham, mortadella, and provolone in layers on round Italian bread and topped with olive salad. As an added bonus, the leftover olive salad can make a good side dish. To make the salad, combine large green and black olives with garlic, diced green and red bell pepper, celery, mushrooms, vegetable oil, vinegar, onion, and season to taste.
The healthy Californian sandwich gives vegetarians a healthy sandwich option. The sandwich consists of avocado, tomatoes, cabbage, goat cheese, cream cheese, and squash. These ingredients are then diced and combined, then mixed with olive oil and lemon juice and put on whole-grain bread. For the salad, combine a pear with blue cheese, radicchio leaves, and arugula, then top with chopped walnuts, pomegranate seeds, and honey.
For this sandwich, grill or roast chicken after it has been marinated in a combination of lemon juice, olive oil, rosemary, salt and pepper for an hour and a half. Slice the chicken, then add the chicken slices to a baguette, along with hot peppers, fontina cheese, spicy salami, and mayonnaise. Follow your favorite potato salad recipe for a side dish to the sandwich.
