Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who have died while serving in the United States military. It is fitting, then, that the American flag be so prominent on this holiday. Flags are placed on the grave sites of fallen servicemen and women, waved in parades and other public events, and hung at residences all over the nation. The American flag and its colors of red, white and blue also inspires arrangements of flowers that are created in honor of this day. Using this patriotic symbol as a palette, it is both easy and rewarding to assemble Memorial Day floral arrangements.
Making Memorial Day Floral Arrangements
Choose red, white, and blue flowers that reflect the hues of the American flag. Use red roses, gerbera daisies, ranunculus, and tulips. Incorporate white stock, daisies, chrysanthemums, and carnations. Select blue irises, delphiniums, cornflower, and hyacinth.
Arrange flowers in clear red, white or blue glass vases. Tie flag-inspired ribbons around the necks of the vases.
Create floral arrangements in other containers, such as wooded boxes, woven baskets, clay pots, and ceramic mugs. Fill the containers with instant floral foam that has been fully saturated and cut to fit. Insert greenery and red, white and blue flowers into the floral foam. Poke small American flags into the foam to complete the arrangements.
Make Memorial Day floral wreaths to place at grave sites. Soak instant floral foam wreath forms in water until they are fully saturated. Lay them on a work surface. Insert greenery and red, white and blue flowers into the wreath forms until it they completely covered.
Embellish floral wreaths with ribbons in complementary colors. Tie ribbons into bows, or leave them loose. Wrap floral wire around the ribbon, position the ribbon against the wreath, and poke the wire into the floral foam.
Assemble a Memorial Day floral swag arrangement to hang over a door. Insert greenery and flowers in patriotic colors into a brick of instant floral foam that is enclosed in a plastic cage. Use long, trailing pieces of greenery for a draping effect on either side of the swag. Wind floral wire through the back of the plastic cage and use it to hang the swag on a nail.
