Labor Day Events in Jefferson, Texas

Jefferson is a historic town in east Texas. Today, it is known for its antique shops, bed and breakfasts, and celebrations of its old west heritage. Jefferson was a major inland port in the 1840s through the 1870s, with people heading west stopping on the way. Train travel, and other events, put an end to that, but Jefferson has retained his historic charm. There is always a celebration going on in Jefferson, and Labor day is no exception.

Historic Jefferson Railway

The Jefferson train makes its trip through the Big Cypress Bayou and the pine forests around Jefferson twice each Saturday through the summer, culminating with a Labor Day celebration. On Labor Day children under six ride free and there is free hot dogs and chips for all passengers. The train goes through swamp area where a horror movie was filmed, and you will hear ghost stories and probably an invitation to come back for the night train. Historic Jefferson Railway 400 E. Haunted Train

The daytime train in Jefferson is for sightseeing and perhaps a few ghost stories, and of course to see where the horror movie was filmed. But the night train is for those that want to experience a train of horror. This runs all summer, and Labor Day weekend is the big finale of the season. Start your evening with ghost stories at 8 p.m. each day during the weekend, with some ghost stories at the haunted depot. The train departs from the haunted depot at 9 p.m., and you will hear more ghost stories as you move through the dark woods along the bayou. Historic Jefferson Railway 400 E. Car Shows and Music

Jefferson holds a classic car show every Labor Day Weekend at the Transportation Building Parking Lot on East Austin Street. Proceeds go to the volunteer fire department. After looking at the cars, go over to Auntie Skinners, a classic rock music venue that also serves food. Special concerts are set for Labor day. Shreveport Labor Day Blues Fest

Shreveport, La., is about 25 miles from Jefferson, and has a blues festival over Labor Day weekend. The event features 10 or more blues musicians from 2 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Sunday of the weekend.
