Flag Cupcake Ideas

Cupcakes are extremely popular, sometimes replacing a traditional cake for birthday parties and special events. Cupcakes are easily distributed to guests and also provide a variety of flavor options. For occasions requiring a patriotic theme, there are several creative cupcake opportunities.

Flag Cupcake Cake

You often see cupcake cakes at children's parties, as it is so easy to serve to the kids. Make flag cupcakes in any flavor you prefer and top them all with white frosting. Depending on the size of the event and how many cupcakes need to be made, arrange all of the cupcakes in the form a rectangle to mimic the shape of a traditional flag. For example, five rows of 10 cupcakes will yield 50 cupcakes. Top all of the cupcakes in the upper left-hand corner with blue sprinkles. For the remaining cupcakes, create stripes by topping a line of cupcakes with red sprinkles, leaving plain, white frosted cupcakes as a stripe in between. White candy star-shaped sprinkles on the blue cupcakes finish off this beautiful, edible creation.

Stars and Stripes

For cupcakes that will wow guests, use red and blue rolled fondant to prepare individual stars-and-stripes cupcakes. Frost the cupcakes with white frosting, spread thin. Cut red strips in 1-inch-wide sections that are long enough to cover the cupcakes. The red strips should be laid across and placed close together to form the stripes. Using a star-shaped cookie cutter, pressed out stars and use them to top the center of the red stripes. Arrange the cupcakes on a festive platter or set them out in small groups to decorate the party area.

Berry Patriotic Cupcakes

For a 4th of July party, create simple cupcakes with delectable flavor. Choose angel-food cake or a plain vanilla cake, so as not to overpower the icing and toppings. For chocolate lovers, try a fudge-flavored, almost brownie-style cupcake. Use a light layer of cream cheese icing, as it complements fruit well. Add ripe strawberries and blueberries to the top and top the cupcakes with light red or blue sugar sprinkles.
