If you are looking for a healthy alternative to candy for Valentine's Day this year, or you just want to do something different and special for your child, you don't have to break the bank to find the right gift. There are many cost-effective alternatives to traditional Valentine's Day gifts.

By utilizing photo-sharing websites such as flickr.com or shutterfly.com, use photos to customize coffee mugs, calendars, photo books, key chains, T-shirts and so much more. For an older child, create a digital scrapbook of her and her friends, family or special events. For a younger child, create custom storybooks. Write your own story, or upload your child's picture into one of the pre-written stories. You can create custom puzzles with your child featured next to her favorite actor or singer. Imagine her delight being featured on a Hannah Montana puzzle, right next to the star herself. Other gift ideas are customized journals, mouse pads, magnets, stickers or keepsake boxes.

Jewelry is a great gift for girls, although certain pieces work for boys as well. You can find less expensive jewelry that looks as good as expensive items. It may make more sense to go cheaper if you are buying for a younger child, who may lose it. Mall stores and kiosks have necklaces, earrings, watches, cuff links and bracelets, which you could engrave with a special message. Often, department stores will run sales on jewelry at certain times of the year, and you could get a quality item for a low price. Online websites such as overstock.com have designer surplus jewelry and other products for discounted prices.

Stores such as Victoria's Secret and Bath and Body Works have annual or semi-annual sales, when they greatly discount their fragrances and lotions. This is the time to buy gift sets of perfumes and colognes, and they can serve as Valentine's Day presents for older children. Look for sales on scents at department stores after Christmas. Check stores such as TJ Maxx and drugstores, since they sometimes sell perfumes and body splashes for a lower price. Walgreens sells a cotton candy scented body splash that any little girl would love.

Concert or event tickets are a special way to say "Happy Valentine's Day" to your child. Buy tickets for the two of you, or invite a friend to come along. Check ticketmaster.com or your local concert hall to see what acts are scheduled around that time. If the show is after Valentine's Day, wrap the ticket, or wrap a picture of the celebrity or group performing.
