A fun activity to help your kids ring in the New Year is to have them make New Year's Eve arts and crafts. They could make crafts to decorate your home for a New Year's Eve party and they could even make crafts to wear, such as New Year's Eve party hats. Regardless of the year, you and your child can easily create hats to mark the special occasion. Follow the instructions in this article to learn how.
How to Make New Year's Party Hats
Gather the supplies you will need to create your New Year's Eve party hats. You cab purchase these supplies at a retail outlet such as Target.
Place all your materials on a table. You may want to cover the table with newspaper to protect it from getting painted on and decorated with glitter.
Cut out the inside circle of a paper plate, leaving the ridged rim in place. You will need one rim and one inside circle per hat, so cut out as many as you will need for the number of top hats you intend to make. Paint both sides of the rim black using your black paint and set it aside to dry. Paint one side of the inner plate circle and set it aside as well. Wait for the paint to dry.
Get ready to use your black construction paper. You will be forming it into the shape of a cylinder and attaching it to your paper plate rim. If you picture a top hat, you are attaching the rim of the hat to the sides of the hat. Place your rim on the table. Bend a piece of construction paper and fit the bottom portion of the paper into the inside of the rim. The paper should be standing inside the rim in the shape of an oval or half circle. The paper will not be long enough to fill the entire rim. Take another piece of construction paper and fit it inside of the rim so it stands as well. The construction paper will overlap inside the rim and form a cylinder shape. Tape the pieces of construction paper together where they overlap.
Secure the construction paper cylinder to the inside of the hat rim with glue. Carefully slide your construction paper cylinder out of the hat rim. Squirt Elmer's glue around the bottom edges of the cylinder. Reinsert the cylinder into the hat rim and allow time for the glue to dry, thus securing the rim to the cylinder.
Attach the top of the top hat. Use the inside circle you cut from the plate for the top of your New Year's hat. Place the circle piece of the plate on top of your cylinder. Carefully tape the plate piece to the top sides of your cylinder to secure it.
Decorate the outside of the hat to your liking. You can add gold colored letter stickers that say "Happy New Year." You may also want to use number stickers to reflect the new year. Use glitter paint to make little circles or squiggly lines that will add some sparkle to your hat.
