Preschool Valentine Arts and Crafts

Valentine's Day is a wonderful occasion for creating handcrafted items. While Valentine's Day is largely reserved for romantic notions between adults, children also adore the theme of love, hearts and romance. For preschool children, just learning about Valentine's Day can be an exciting time. However, for adults, trying to figure out what Valentine's Day crafts to do with a preschooler can be daunting. Nevertheless, with a little bit of planning and effort, you will find that it can be easy to work with preschoolers to make beautiful Valentine's arts and crafts projects.

Decorating Cookies

One age-appropriate Valentine's Day craft project for preschoolers is decorating cookies. Bake a batch of heart-shaped sugar cookies, and cut them out with a heart-shaped cookie cutter. You can also purchase heart-shaped cookies from a supermarket or bakery. Using tubes of red, pink and white royal icing, crystallized colored sugars, candies and sprinkles, have the children decorate their heart cookies.

Homemade Valentine's Day Cards

An old-fashioned craft is making homemade Valentine's Day cards. Have the children cut out heart shapes from red construction paper. Then, using paper doilies, crayons, markers, glitter, stickers and foam shapes of hearts and cherubs (which can be purchased at a craft store), have the children decorate the heart shapes. Help the children to write special notes on the cards and to sign their names on the cards.

Red Roses

A quick craft for preschoolers is making red roses. Have the children crumple red tissue paper into flower shapes. Then, have an adult push a green pipe cleaner through the bottom center to form the stem, and staple the pipe cleaner into place. The children can make several flowers and have a cute bouquet.

Wax Paper Hearts

Another preschool Valentine's Day craft is to make wax paper hearts. In order to make these, have the children tear pink and red tissue paper into small pieces. Then have the children glue the pieces onto a square piece of wax paper. Next, help the children to cut out heart shapes from red construction paper. Have adults cut the tissue paper in the same size as the red heart, using the red heart as a template. Glue the wax paper onto the red heart. Have an adult staple a red yarn loop on the top, and the wax paper heart can be hung up.
