Decorative Aluminum Garden Fences

Overview

Traditionally, fences have required maintenance to maintain both their look and physical integrity. Aluminum fencing is a low-maintenance alternative to wood, vinyl or iron fencing, and it can add elegance to the look of your garden. Properly installed, aluminum fencing can provide protection for your gardens and may, in some cases, be a good security addition to your home and garden.

Benefits

Aluminum fencing is a cost-effective alternative to more traditional wrought iron fencing. Unlike wrought iron fencing, it won't corrode. Because of its anti-corrosive properties, aluminum fencing is almost maintenance free. Its light weight makes it easier than iron fencing to transport and install. Durable aluminum finishes are available in a variety of colors, including black to mimic the look of iron.

Function

There are several types of decorative aluminum fences available. Depending on the height of the fence and the distance between fence elements, your fence could be an attractive way of keeping animals and children out of gardening areas. However, some decorative aluminum fences could be installed simply for their visual appeal. In some cases, especially around swimming pools, an aluminum fence can be a good way to keep children away from a potentially dangerous area.

Types

Some types of decorative aluminum fencing can be installed using clips. Others may require screws. In some cases, the main supports may require screws, while the decorative slats may simply clip on. Specially designed decorative fences for swimming pools are often certified as pool safety fences.

Installation

Although decorative aluminum fences can be professionally installed, many suppliers offer self-installation help and instructions. Post holes should be between 10 and 12 inches in diameter, depending on the size of the main supports, and should be 36 inches deep or below your area's frost line, whichever is deeper. Post holes should be spaced per manufacturer's instructions with the bottom 2 inches filled with gravel. The posts should be set in concrete to within 2 to 4 inches of the ground level.

Considerations

Even though aluminum fences are not the most expensive fencing material, fencing a large area can be expensive. Because it is color stable, you can install aluminum fencing over several years without having a problem with color variance. If you choose to install your decorative fence over several years, make sure that the style fencing you choose will be manufactured for the duration of your project to avoid problems with locating adequate supplies of fencing in your desired style.
