Overview

Some gardeners believe that adding sugar water to their plants increases vitality and overall plant growth. This is usually done by adding bleached sugar and dissolving it into the irrigation system. The actual results are far from benevolent and can cause serious problems.

Microorganisms

Sugar that resides in the soil can help stimulate the production of microorganisms present at the roots of the plant. This overstimulation can cause plants to become overworked and stressed, and can make it harder for root systems to take in nutrients and water from the soil. Food Plants generate sugar through absorbing water, carbon dioxide and sunlight in a process called "photosynthesis." If the plant is absorbing sugar along with water, it may negatively affect the plant's ability to keep making its own food. Variation Different plants react differently to sugar. A very small amount of sugar can sometimes be beneficial, but there is very little evidence to support this. Care To keep your plants safe and healthy, the best advice is to give them plenty of water and sunlight, as well as a high-nutrient diet and rich soil.

Moisture

The presence of sugar in the soil can upset the balance of pH levels in the water. This will immediately affect the plant's ability to perform osmosis. As the sugar prevents absorption of nutrients, plants become starved and dehydrated until they can no longer create food for themselves. Sugar water will also absorb additional water, forcing the soil to remain moist. This can lead to increased bacterial and fungal growth in the soil that can later infect plants.

Photosynthesis

A possible consequence of adding sugar to water and feeding plants is the disruption of the plant's natural ability to create its own food. The additional sugar cannot be broken down and used the same way as plant's food, and will limit the food it produces on its own.

Claims

It is possible that some plants will react to additional sugar in a positive manner, but there is little to known research to back up the claims. Plants experimented with sugar water regimens have so far never shown additional vitality.

Care

The best way to care for a plant is to simply give it the necessary compounds needed for growth. Adequate sun, water and nutrients found in fertilizer are the main components to growing beautiful plants that reach their full potential. Also, be aware of possible pest and disease threats that your plants may experience, doing your best to take precautionary measures.
