Damaged bark on a holly tree (Ilex spp.) should be removed to assist the tree in closing off the wound, which will help ward off pests, diseases and other problems. Use a sharp knife to carefully trim away loose bark in an oval shape around the damage, the University of Tennessee Extension advises.
