How Much Grass Seed Do I Need?

Measure the square footage of your yard by multiplying the length of your yard by the width. Subtract any non-lawn areas, such as driveways, from the calculation. Most grass seeds will cover anywhere from 1 lb. for every 200 square feet to 1 lb. for every 1,000 square feet--check the bag for specific instructions. Use the heaviest coverage recommended on the packaging when seeding a new lawn and the lower coverage when seeding over an existing lawn.
