Along coastal areas, Monterey cypress trees grow close to coastal bluff scrub. Inland, the trees mingle with Monterey pine. Dwarf shrubs and perennial herbs, including several types of manzanita and California sagebrush, may grow in the understory created by many Monterey cypress trees growing together.
