Use a fertilizer with a 3-1-2 ratio of slow-release nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, in the form of potash, in the fall. Apply 1 pound per 1,000 square feet in September after aerating the lawn and apply 1 1/2 pounds per 1,000 square feet again in October.
