The amount of grass seed that is needed to cover 1,000 square feet depends on the type of grass used. Check the grass seed label for seeding rates. For example, Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) requires two pounds per 1,000 square feet, while six pounds should be used for tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), advises the University of Kentucky.
