Plants require the sun to complete the process of photosynthesis. Plants and seeds adapted to climates or growing seasons with less light can live longer in darkness. Some, such as the resurrection plant, can lie dormant for months or years without dying. Most plants die without light after a matter of weeks, depending on the plant. Some may survive if returned to the light, but may suffer permanent damage.
