Resin Flower Pots Vs. Concrete


Flower pots, also known as planters and containers, add interest to a garden landscape. Adding height, planting space and personality, the garden flower pot allows the gardener to further implement the style of the property into the landscaping. Concrete flower pots come in a variety of patterns and styles, from the classic faux bois planters to the straight lines of modern planters. Resin planters simulate the look of concrete, giving the same appearance with a variety of different advantages and disadvantages.


Both concrete and resin flower pots fulfill the same basic function. They allow for the planting of plants, trees and shrubs in a wide variety of locations, regardless of the soil. For example, planters may be situated along concrete driveways, inside entrance-ways and on patio or decks. In general, concrete flower pots are larger in size, while resin planters are available in a wide range of sizes.

Planting Considerations

The basics of container gardening apply to both concrete and resin flower pots. The pot should feature drainage holes in the bottom of the planter for proper drainage. Disadvantages of Concrete

Concrete is an extremely heavy material. In many cases, large concrete flower pots filled with soil cannot be moved. Concrete flower pots feature a porous surface, which may need sealing in order to slow down the evaporation of water. The lack of drainage holes in a concrete planter may create problems as they will be hard, if not impossible, to add without damaging the planter. Concrete requires a thorough curing process, otherwise it affects the alkalinity of the soil.

Advantages of Resin

Resin flower pots provide the look of concrete without the weight. High-end resin planters are indistinguishable from the original concrete based on appearances alone. Extremely lightweight, resin simulates the look of natural materials well. The molding process allows for patterns, textures and finishes usually found on expensive planters. Ideal for porches and balconies, resin provides a durable planter featuring little moisture loss.

Disadvantages of Resin

Resin flower pots may not hold a large shrub or tree upright in windy locations. Resin flower pots may not be strong enough to hold the growing root systems of some plants, resulting in a split pot. As a non-porous surface, resin flower pots must have adequate drainage holes.
