Several ornamental grasses native to the American prairie thrive in gravelly soil. Prairie dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis) has tufts of delicate, arching leaves. Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is a deep-rooted, clumping grass with blue or red stems. Up to 3 feet high, sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) has striking, orange-speckled flowers.
