Grown primarily for their showy, often variegated foliage, hostas like morning sun and filtered afternoon shade. Using large hostas as a background for--or mixing dwarf hostas with--shade-loving impatiens (Impatiens walleriana) creates a colorful spring-to-fall garden palette. Impatiens flowers are white or shades of pink, red, orange or purple.
