Hydrangeas should be separated during the autumn season. At this time, the leaves will have fallen off of the tree, leaving the branches bare. Gardeners can also wait to divide the hydrangea in spring, just before new growth starts to appear. Use a shovel to dig up the hydrangea bush. With the plant on solid ground, use the shovel to divide the plant into two to five new sections.
