Horse manure that is well-cured into crumbling compost is an eco-friendly and healthy alternative to chemical fertilizers and mulch. Fresh manure can be spread and mixed into the soil in the fall or early spring to a depth of 12 to 18 inches. Extra nitrogen may need to be added if there's a lot of sawdust or woodchips mixed in.
