Remove a sunflower from the plant after it has become dry and brown. The plant's leaves will have fallen off and the seeds in the center of the flower will be hard and dark colored with a stripe. Wrap a paper bag over the cut flower head and hang it to dry further. The seeds will fall into the bag.
