Tomatoes (Lycopesicon esculentum) first originated in South America, particularly in the countries of Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru, according to Texas A&M University. Brought to Europe by explorers in the 1500s, tomatoes were first cultivated in Italy from where their cultivation eventually spread throughout the continent.
