Onions, planted from seed in full sun and well-draining soil, germinate within 21 days of planting. Harvest time depends on which type of onion is preferred. Scallions, or green onions, should be pulled when the bulbs are 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter, while fully mature onions are ready for harvest when the tops die off, in mid to late autumn.
