Though sometimes mistaken for a vegetable, zucchini is actually a fruit. It is in the Curcurbitaceae family along with melons, cucumbers, squash and gourds. It is a vining plant that grows runners. Unfortunately, these runners are susceptible to a bacterial vascular wilt disease that is caused by beetles.
