Does Cutting Through Roots Kill a Tree?

Cutting through roots will not always kill a tree. Cutting surface roots or a small percentage of the roots does not kill a tree. Cutting into the supporting roots, however, causes the tree to topple and to eventually die, warns the University of Florida.
