The bird-of-paradise is a tropical plant and can only be grown outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 9 through 11. The plant will be damaged by frost, but will come back as long as the ground does not freeze. Mulch around the plant, but keep the mulch 2 to 3 inches away from the stems.
