How Much Do You Clip Back Hydrangeas in the Spring?

Prune hydrangeas that produce flowers on new growth in the early spring, cutting the plant back to approximately 1 to 3 feet from the ground. Hydrangeas that bloom on old wood should be pruned in the fall as soon as the flowers fade.
