Texas A&M University Extension recommends a weekly soaking to a depth of 5 to 6 inches. Deep soaking encourages deep rooting. Deeply irrigated soils stay moist for several days, rather than one day. Use mulch around plants to conserve moisture. Container-grown plants, especially small containers, may need daily watering in hot summer weather.
