DIY Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Thanksgiving is one of the most popular holidays for large family get-togethers. Long tables are set and the food is plentiful. Depending on the size of your gathering, one or more centerpieces can dress up the table setting, adding to the mood of the holiday. There are many choices of things to use that remind people of Thanksgiving and fall. Fall flowers are normally large and brightly colored and can bring quick attention to your holiday table. There are centerpieces that will take you a few hours to just a few minutes depending on the time you have.

Pilgrim Hat Floral Centerpiece

Step 1

Place the flower pot with the open end down on a large piece of cardboard and trace around the circle. Measure 6 inches out from the circle all the way around and make a larger circle. Cut the cardboard just inside or slightly smaller than both markings using scissors; or for a smoother cut, use a craft knife.

Step 2

Cut a square from the cardboard measuring 6 inches high by 5 inches wide. Measure into the square 1 1/2 inch and cut out the center. The square should now resemble a buckle.

Step 3

Paint the outside of the flower pot and the round cardboard flat black. Paint the buckle shiny gold. Set them aside to dry.

Step 4

Place hot glue on the rim of the flower pot and press the cardboard circle on top. Hold it until the glue cools and it stays in place. Then hot glue the buckle onto the side of the pot; this is now the front. The flower pot should now look like an upside down pilgrim hat.

Step 5

Cut floral foam to fill ¾ of the pot. Soak the foam until it turns a dark green and place it in the pot.

Step 6

Cut the flowers and leaves with long enough stems to stick in the foam. Arrange the flowers with the leaves scattered throughout. You can also place a smaller potted mum arrangement in the pot if you want to keep the flowers growing after Thanksgiving.

Pumpkin Flowers and Candles

Step 1

Place a tea candle on top of each small pumpkin and trace around it. Cut the circle with a craft knife and, using a spoon, take out just enough of the top to fit the tea candle in.

Step 2

Put a large plastic cup upside down on the top of the large pumpkin and trace around the rim. Cut the circle out of the pumpkin and remove all the seeds from the inside.

Step 3

Insert the large plastic cup into the large pumpkin and place a fall flower bouquet in the cup. Fill the cup with water and a package of floral preservative.

Step 4

Place the arrangement on the table and light the tea candles.
