With the right care, herbaceous peonies will grow in northern and central Mississippi's climate. Select two-year plants and plant their eyes 1 inch, instead of 2 inches, beneath the soil's surface. Water them adequately when rainfall is scarce. Tree peonies may be successful south of Jackson.
