Many perennial plants perform well in containers. Match the container location to the plant's sunlight, water and space requirements. Perennials in pots face exposure to temperatures from all sides of the planter. Winterize container plants by burying the planter in the garden or mulching around the pot for insulation. Lack of soil insulation limits cold hardiness to at least one planting zone less than recommended on the growing label.
