Ohio State University recommends removing one-third the total length of the lawn during a mowing session. Grass clippings approximately 1 inch in length are beneficial to lawns as they provide a natural source of nitrogen. Heavy layers of grass clippings that create clumps may choke the grass by limiting oxygen and sun.
