Rayburn, an extension specialist at the University of West Virginia Extension Service, explains that plants absorb water and energy from the sunlight to photosynthesize and grow. While most plants get their light source from the sun, it is possible to grow plants with alternative light sources like lamps and grow lights, without ever exposing them to sunlight.
