According to EdibleContainerGardening.com, tomato plants grow well in containers as small as a 5-gallon bucket. Larger containers are needed for larger tomato plants. The 5-gallon bucket is recommended for smaller tomato plants, such as the Roma tomato, which grows to an average height of 4-feet. For larger plants containers up to 20-gallons give the plants adequate space to develop root systems.
