Grow full-size tomato plants in a pot size with a soil volume of at least 5 gallons, recommends the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, and cherry tomatoes in a pot holding 3 gallons, Iowa State advises. For truly luxuriant tomatoes, use even larger 15-gallon nursery pots, recommends "Vegetable Gardening for Dummies."
