List of Ethanol Plants in the Midwest

Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol is a renewable fuel made from various grains, such as corn, sorghum and wheat. The grain is fermented, converting it from starch into sugar and then into alcohol. According to the Renewable Fuels Association, “Ethanol has become a ubiquitous component of our nation’s fuel supply, as it is blended in virtually every gallon of unleaded gasoline in the U.S. Growing to meet rising demand created by the Renewable Fuels Standard, an additional 16 biorefineries are being built or expanded in 2010 that will add 1.4 billion gallons of new capacity.”
