Lawn mower pull cords get quite a lot of abuse. Not surprisingly, they are often one of the first things to break. If your lawn mower pull cord breaks, you can try fixing it yourself. It is a quick fix and the part is easy to find. You should be able to find a new pull cord at your local hardware store. When fixing your pull cord, keep in mind how it works. The cord is wound around a pulley inside the starter housing. When you pull the cord, the pulley spins and triggers the engine to start.
Open the housing on the top of your lawn mower and remove the starter pulley. You may need to remove the gas tank. Unwind any remaining cord from the pulley.
Tie the new cord to the pulley using a tight knot. Wind the cord all the way around the pulley twice.
Put the cord through the hole in the cover of the starter pulley. Reattach the pulley to the engine.
Tie the old handle to the new cord if the new one didn't come with a handle. Cut off any extra cord.
