How to Make Apple Butter Jam


Apple butter jam is basically a thickened applesauce that has been slowly cooked in cider and sugar. Slather it on toast, bagels and even ham. You may have trouble finding it in some supermarkets, but apple butter jam tastes much better when you make it yourself anyway. Make a large batch at home and can any excess for future use.

Step 1

Pour 3 cups unsweetened applesauce and 3/4 cup apple cider in the slow cooker and set to high heat. You can use store-bought or homemade applesauce.

Step 2

Stir 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar into the liquid in the slow cooker.

Step 3

Cook for three hours, stirring once every 30 minutes.

Step 4

Sprinkle in 2 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, 1 tsp. cloves, 1/2 tsp. nutmeg and 1/2 tsp. ginger. Stir the ingredients until well combined, and continue cooking for another hour.

Step 5

Turn off the slow cooker and transfer the apple butter jam to sterilized canning jars.
