How to Make Tropical Centerpieces

Give your next get-together a tropical feel by using water, sand and tropical flowers to create tropical centerpieces, bringing a bit of the tropics into your home. Purchasing a store-bought centerpiece can be expensive, while making your own requires few supplies which keep the cost down and allows you to design the exact look you want.

Step 1

Select a wide mouth, shallow glass bowl for each tropical centerpiece you are making. Place a round mirror in the middle of each table you are decorating and set a glass bowl in the center of each mirror.

Step 2

Add clear glass stones to the bottom of each bowl and fill with water to within 1 inch of the rim. Add blue food coloring to the water, if desired.

Step 3

Select approximately six to eight orchids for each centerpiece. The number of flowers used will depend on how large the flowers and bowl are, more or less may be necessary. Cut the stems clear back directly underneath the flower heads.

Step 4

Float the orchid flowers directly on top of the water of each bowl. Add small floating candles around the flowers.

Step 5

Sprinkle sand over each mirror around the bowls. Place additional candles around the bowl on the mirrors. Light the candles in the bowl and on the mirror when your guests arrive.
