How to Make Homecoming Centerpieces

Fall leaves, football and team spirit are all a part of back to school festivities, whether high school or college. It's time for pep rallies, cheering and of course the homecoming dance. Incorporate fall flowers, and the school colors, into homecoming centerpieces. Construct a football field out of moss and surrounded by flowers.

Football Field

Step 1

Pack the baking pan with floral foam. Soak the pan and foam in water for 20 minutes. Remove and drain the pan so the water doesn't slosh out while you're arranging the centerpiece.

Step 2

Paint the dowels in your school's colors. Construct two goal posts by gluing together one dowel horizontally to two upright dowels. The horizontal dowel should be 2/3 of the way up the upright dowels.

Step 3

Cut the Irish moss from the nursery flat so it's 4 inches shorter and 2 inches narrower than the baking pan. Lay the moss on the foam, centering it. Secure it in place with a floral pin in each corner and in the middle of the sides.

Step 4

Tuck sphagnum moss around the sides of the pan into the foam. It should hang down the outside sides.

Step 5

Poke the goal posts 1 inch down into the foam so they are 1 inch away from each end of the Irish moss at the long end of the pan and centered in the short ends. Hot glue curly ribbon bows to the ends of the goal posts.

Step 6

Mark the moss field with string to designate the yardage lines. There should be 10 equally spaced yardage lines across the field. Start with the line in the center and put five lines on either side equally spaced. Secure each line with a floral pin.

Step 7

Fill in the area between the moss and the edge of the pan with different sized chrysanthemums in the school colors by poking their stems into the foam. Cut the stems to 2 inches. Dye white mums for colors that aren't natural such as blue, black, orange and aqua. Or just keep the school colors to the ribbon streamers and use mums in fall colors.

School Mascot or Logo

Step 1

Pack 1/2 sheet cake baking pans with foam.

Step 2

Cut moss to a 10 by 10 inch square, place in the center of the pan and secure with floral pins.

Step 3

Copy the school mascot or logo in color onto a piece of card stock. Laminate the card stock. Cut the image out. Place in the center of the moss, securing in each corner with floral pins. Surround the image with button mums pushed into the moss.

Step 4

Fill the spaces between the moss and the edge of the pan with chrysanthemums.
