Making brownies with applesauce adds volume to the dish without extra fat and calories, resulting in a moist and rich texture. This recipe yields approximately 16 brownies, each containing only 136 calories and 5.2 grams of fat. Add your favorite toppings such as caramel or powdered sugar, or serve with a scoop of ice cream on top for a decadent dessert.
Position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F. Spray an 8-inch square baking pan lightly with vegetable oil cooking spray and set aside.
Add the granulated sugar, cocoa powder, applesauce, vegetable oil, egg, vanilla extract and low-fat yogurt to a large mixing bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until well combined.
Stir together all-purpose flour and baking powder in a separate mixing bowl. Add the flour mixture to the applesauce mixture and stir until just combined.
Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan and place in the oven. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, and then remove from the pan from the oven.
Sprinkle the brownies with semi-sweet chocolate chips and chopped walnuts if desired. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
Remove the dish from the oven, cut into 16 brownies and transfer to a wire rack for cooling. Allow to cool for at least 30 minutes before serving. Store leftover brownies in a covered container at room temperature for up to five days.
